How language skills can boost your career and your personal development

There are many reasons to learn a new language. As we’ve discussed previously, being bilingual can help you land a job faster in the IT sector. But as our Global Education Manager Rick Sullivan points out, it can go further than that.
“Having the ability to speak multiple languages shows employers that you are a good learner who is prepared to go the extra mile to get the job you desire,” explains Tek Experts’ Global Education Manager, Rick Sullivan. “But outside of work, it also helps you develop as an individual, improving your focus and expertise as well as your wider understanding of the world.”

“At Tek Experts, we offer our staff the opportunity to learn a new language. It’s part of our commitment to continuous learning, an approach which allows employees to quickly grow their skillset and become a valuable professional no matter what industry they go on to work in.”

Language for career growth

So, just how can learning new language skills boost your personal development.

     1. Pay attention for longer

Research has shown that those people who spend time learning a foreign language have improved focus. Those who speak two or more languages can pay attention for up to 20% longer than those who only speak one. In a customer support environment that’s a real benefit as more complex issues could require maintained focus in order to bring the problem to a successful conclusion.

     2. Promote health

People who speak two or more languages have been found to experience lower levels of anxiety and stress than their counterparts. Plus, a study by the American Academy of Neurology showed that learning languages increases the neural pathways in the brain, which help boost short-term and long-term memory.

     3. Become a global citizen

Figures from the British Council revealed that by 2020, there will be more than 2 billion people around the world who speak English. So when you think that the world’s population was 7.5 billion in 2016, you can be pretty confident that wherever you go, you’ll be able to converse with someone if your English is up to scratch. But it’s not just English – any second language would be good to get under your belt. “Because most Vietnamese speak English, outside of work I’m learning Japanese,” says Tek Experts Business Analyst Tung Le Manh or ‘Sim’ to his friends. “Japan is a big country and I’m seeing more and more customers coming from there.”

“In some countries, like China and Costa Rica, we need staff to be able to support clients and customers in Japan,” adds Rick. “That might mean that Chinese or Spanish is their first language and Japanese is their second. But they’ll still need English to be able to communicate effectively with other members of our global community and our English lessons can help with that.”
If you have the passion to succeed, Tek Experts can provide the training that helps your develop, not only in your career but also in life.
