“I’ve managed people in the past, but this was a whole new ball game.”
At my previous company, I didn’t really feel like I was a good fit for the job. I was a Business Analyst, and while I was fine with most of my duties, I struggled with the financial side of the role.
I prefer to work with people, not numbers, so that was something I had in mind as I started my new job search. Tek Experts Nigeria looked like somewhere that puts people first – with the company values of ‘Stronger Together’ and ‘Customer First,’, standing out to me, so I put in my application.
Realizing my ambition
Shortly afterwards, I was invited to attend an assessment center
. It was something I hadn’t done before but, because I can stay cool under pressure, I enjoyed it. Plus, the Tek Experts team on the day made it a very welcoming environment.
After I performed all the tests, the Tek Experts Nigeria team thought I would be most effective in a Team Manager role
. This was music to my ears! It just goes to show that the personality tests really do work, as I’ve always seen myself as a people person.
I’ve managed people in the past, but this was a whole new ball game. It’s been a challenge – but what I’ve found most successful is putting myself in other people’s shoes, which helps me to understand different personality types and develop more emotional intelligence. I’ve also done a lot of personal study in my own time to help set me up for success. I feel like I’ve come a long way since I started. I’m still not perfect but, crucially, I have everybody in the team on my side.
As well as managing 20+ Support Engineers, I manage the escalation process, drive the KPIs, collaborate with the Quality Analysts to see where improvement can be made to the team, and update other managers on the performance of the team in weekly meetings. For the meetings, I create PowerPoint slides and present them to management, which is something that’s new to me. I’ve not always been comfortable with public speaking but I’m definitely improving.
Also, due to my background in English – I studied English language and literature at university – I was asked to do some informal communication-skills teaching. Training is not something I’ve done before but it was such a great experience. I got great feedback from the students, which was great to hear.
To help me switch off from work, I like to watch movies and sing at karaoke. It seems to be working as I come into work every day nice, fresh and ready to make a positive impact.
