About the role...

As Global IT and Data Privacy Counsel you will be a key part of our Global Legal Team, tasked with ensuring Group compliance, worldwide.

You will be responsible for reviewing, advising on, and managing the Group’s data protection compliance and privacy. You will deal with a broad scope of data and IT legal tasks, working reactively to efficiently respond to business requests, and proactively to advise on opportunities and risks.

You will help to develop the Group’s Global Data Protection policies, program and strategy, using your superb collaboration skills to liaise with global teams and ensure alignment and compliance across all sites. An integral part of our global team, you will provide legal support to our engineering, product and business units in the development of new products, the opening up of new business areas and the implementation of data (protection) and IT legal requirements.

What you’ll be doing

    • Managing and responding to cyber security risks, responding to data protection client audits, and managing subject access requests
    • Reviewing data protection clauses of client agreements and vendor contracts
    • Working with the IT teams and the Group CISO to assess IT security risks for the Group and developing appropriate awareness and training programs
    • Advising on and leading complex, IT-related transactions with clients, including outsourcing service agreements, SaaS subscription agreements, content sharing agreements and general software licensing agreements
    • Identifying legal risks in relation to the data protection, IP and IT related terms ensuring highest levels of protection are in place
    • Responding promptly to internal department requests, summarizing and communicating legal risks while allowing a balance of risk that conforms to the Group’s business objectives
    • Regularly monitoring and managing compliance relating to data protection 
    • Conducting legal research and evaluation of different risk factors regarding business decisions and operations as regards data privacy  
    • Occasional travel to various site locations, as needed 
    • Additional duties as required to meet the ongoing needs of the business.

What you'll need

Qualifications:
  • Law degree with strong academic credentials (preferably UK/US)
  • A Master’s degree is highly desirable 
  • Licensed practitioner in the UK/EU.
Skills:
  • Exceptional written English skills, and the ability to review and draft agreements in English 
  • Well-developed communication skills and the ability to concisely relay large amounts of information
  • The ability to work from standard templates, review third party contracts and creatively draft new wording as necessary
  • An analytical eye to assess and identify legal risk and offer appropriate legal solutions
  • Knowledge and understanding of general contract law, general commercial law, data protection law, with strong focus on the following: GDPR, IP protection, limitations of liability, insurance, general understanding of dispute resolution
  • Outstanding organization and prioritization skills that allow you to work efficiently to demanding deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to form strong working relationships with global teams while maintaining firm adherence to legal standards
  • Experience working for international companies, supporting global teams
  • A team-focused mindset and the ability to work as part of a project team structure.
Experience:
  • 4 + years PQE of relevant professional experience, gained in private legal practice in an international law firm and/or in similar in-house positions in international companies
  • A strong technical background and/or previous data privacy, IT and IP experience
  • A deep understanding of privacy and other regulations, particularly GDPR, and the ability to translate that understanding into redlines and articulate in negotiations related to DPAs and commercial contracts discussions
  • Experience with international IP rights protection, e-commerce and other digital legal issues
  • Experience in contract and commercial law, with transactional experience IT transactions
  • Understanding of current IT issues and developments, including in the areas of outsourcing or E-commerce
  • Experience of information security standards such as ISO 27001 will be considered an advantage
  • Experience in dealing with data security breaches, managing investigations and dealing with the regulator is preferred.
